School Counseling

Overview of the Guidance Department

At the Weiss School, the School Counseling Department provides students with academic, social development, and career support to ensure that Weiss School students achieve the utmost success. A part-time School Counselor facilitates communication among students, teachers, staff, parents, and administrators regarding student academic and social progress.

Activities include individual and small group counseling for students, classroom lessons, and consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators among all grade levels. The Department activities are based on the national standards from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and includes teaching students developmentally-appropriate lessons in three domains: Academic, Personal/Social, and Career Development. The School Counselor develops lessons and discusses topics including social skills, self-awareness, conflict resolution, respect and empathy for others, goal setting, anger management, drug awareness, and career development.

Support Services Provided

Throughout the school year, situations arise in which students may need a psychological-educational evaluation to determine learning issues. The School Counselor works closely with teachers, psychologists, the School District of Palm Beach County, outside academic tutors, and support personnel to facilitate additional assistance that address any issues impacting struggling students. The School Counselor also reviews psychologist reports on individual students, develops individualized student accommodations plans, and communicates the scope of the plans to respective parents and teachers of the students.

Career Guidance

Career guidance is provided to Weiss School students to prepare them for their academic career after graduating from The Weiss School. In October of each school year, the School Counselor organizes and hosts a High School Showcase for Weiss School middle school students and parents to meet admissions representatives from surrounding local private and public high schools. This Showcase allows Weiss School families to explore the academic options provided by the various high schools and assists in the high school decision-making process.

Visiting the Guidance Department

Students are always welcome and are encouraged to meet with the School Counselor to discuss any potential academic, personal or social issues. In cases in which there is a peer-to-peer conflict, the School Counselor is as mediator who promotes positive communication to resolve any issues. Parents are also encouraged to contact the School Counseling Department to discuss issues that pertain to their children’s academic and social progress. The School Counselor serves as the conduit for communication and frequently schedules parent/teacher conferences to ensure student success.
HOW TO REPORT CHILD ABUSE

As members of the education community and as mandated reporters, remember that by making a report, you are not ensuring the child's safety, you are also providing help and support to the family. When reporting abuse, be prepared to provide specific descriptions of the incident(s) or circumstances contributing to the risk of harm.
